Steel portal frame vs timber frame agricultural buildings

The frame decision sets the shape of the whole quote. Here is where each one genuinely wins, without pretending either is universally cheaper.
Steel portal frame
- Clear span is the reason it dominates. Portal frames carry the wide, column-free spans that grain stores, machinery sheds and covered yards need. Above roughly 15 metres it is usually the only practical answer.
- Predictable engineering. Frames are designed to a standard, fabricated in a shop and bolted together on site, so the structural case is straightforward to evidence for building control and for insurers.
- Fast erection once the foundations are in and cured, which matters when you are working around harvest or housing dates.
- Corrosion is the weak point in livestock buildings. Ammonia and slurry attack steel and fixings. Galvanising, protected sheeting and keeping steel out of the dirty zone all cost money and all get value-engineered out of cheap quotes.
- Foundations are heavier. Portal frame legs concentrate load and horizontal thrust into pad foundations, which is part of why groundworks is such a large line.
Timber frame
- Better behaved around livestock. Timber tolerates the ammonia environment far better than untreated or lightly protected steel, which is why it persists in cattle and sheep housing.
- Kinder in sensitive settings. Where a planning officer or a landscape designation is in play, a timber frame with boarded elevations is an easier conversation than profiled steel.
- Span limits. Timber competes at smaller spans. Push it wide and you are into engineered timber or intermediate columns, and columns in the middle of a machinery store are a permanent daily cost.
- Repairable in place. A damaged timber member can be sistered or replaced by a competent farm joiner. A bent steel stanchion is a specialist job.
- Specification variance is wider. Treatment class, timber grade and connection detailing vary a lot between suppliers, so quotes need reading closely.

Ask both suppliers the same five questions
- What span and eaves height is this priced at, and what does an extra metre of each cost?
- What is the corrosion or timber treatment specification, and what is the warranty on it in an agricultural environment?
- What foundations does this frame require, and are they in your price or someone else's?
- What is the fabrication or supply lead time from order, and what is the erection programme in working days?
- Who produces the structural design and calculations, and will I get them for building control?
There is no universal cheaper option here. On a wide-span machinery store steel usually wins on cost as well as function; on a modest livestock building the corrosion specification a steel frame needs can close the gap entirely. Price both where the span allows, which is exactly what the quote form asks contractors to do.
